COTHM Department of Employability and Career Services Hosts Orientation Session for New Hospitality Batch

The COTHM Department of Employability and Career Services (DECS) hosted a department orientation session for the new Hospitality batch, introducing students to the career development opportunities, professional expectations and employment support available throughout their academic journey.

The session was designed to help newly enrolled students understand the role of employability alongside academic learning and to provide them with an early introduction to the professional standards of the hospitality industry.

During the orientation, students were briefed on the functions and services of the Department of Employability and Career Services, including career guidance, professional development, industry engagement, internship opportunities and employment support. The session highlighted the importance of preparing for the workplace from the beginning of their studies.

The orientation also focused on the skills and professional attributes required to build successful careers in hospitality. Students were encouraged to develop effective communication, workplace professionalism, confidence, teamwork and interpersonal skills alongside their technical and academic knowledge.

The department also highlighted the importance of gaining practical exposure and understanding industry expectations. Students were encouraged to actively participate in training activities, career development initiatives and industry-focused opportunities that can strengthen their professional readiness.

For hospitality students, early career planning can provide a clearer understanding of the diverse pathways available across hotels, restaurants, tourism, travel, food and beverage and other related sectors. The orientation provided students with an opportunity to understand these possibilities and begin considering their individual career goals.

The session also reinforced COTHM’s focus on connecting education with industry requirements. Through the Department of Employability and Career Services, students can receive structured guidance as they progress towards internships, employment and professional opportunities.

The orientation marked an important first step for the new Hospitality batch as they begin their academic journey at COTHM, with a focus on developing the knowledge, skills and professional confidence required for the evolving hospitality industry.
