COTHM Job Readiness Week Opens with Focus on Grooming, Career Planning and Professional Etiquette

COTHM students began the six-day Job Readiness Program with an opening-day session focused on professional grooming, career planning, workplace etiquette and interview preparation, led by the institution’s Placement Team.

The first day was designed to help students understand that workplace readiness extends beyond technical expertise. The session highlighted the importance of professional appearance, appropriate workplace behaviour, effective communication and having a clear career direction in building a successful career in the hospitality industry.

As part of the activities, students participated in practical grooming demonstrations and explored professional standards expected in hospitality workplaces. A “My Career Roadmap” activity encouraged participants to identify their career goals and think about the steps required to progress from education to employment and future professional growth.

The session also included role plays on workplace etiquette, allowing students to examine appropriate professional behaviour in different workplace situations. Participants received guidance on CV writing and improvement, with particular attention given to common CV mistakes that can affect a candidate’s prospects during recruitment.

Interview preparation was another key component of the day. Students were introduced to practical considerations for presenting themselves confidently during interviews and understanding what employers look for when assessing candidates. The Placement Team also discussed current hiring expectations and the importance of developing a professional profile aligned with industry requirements.

The activities connected everyday habits such as personal grooming and professional conduct with the standards expected in the workplace. Rather than treating these areas as separate skills, the session presented them as important components of overall employability.

The opening day encouraged students to take a more structured approach to their career development while strengthening their understanding of professional expectations. Through practical exercises, role plays and career-planning activities, participants were encouraged to begin their Job Readiness Week with a clearer sense of their career direction and the professional standards they will need to meet.
