Basant 2026: Lahore Poised for Grand Spring Celebration with Major Funding

Lahore is gearing up for one of its most anticipated cultural celebrations in nearly two decades as Basant festival preparations move ahead ahead of the February festivities. Officials estimate that the three-day event, set to take place from February 6 to 8, will cost about Rs.910 million (91 crore) on decorations, logistics, security and public arrangements, reflecting a major investment in reviving this beloved traditional festival.

Authorities plan extensive citywide decorations to transform Lahore into a vibrant spring landscape. The administration will also roll out comprehensive traffic and security plans, special public transport arrangements and festival surveillance to ensure a safe and orderly celebration.

Punjab has officially revived Basant after an 18-year hiatus by allowing kite flying under strict safety regulations designed to avoid the hazards that previously led to the ban. The celebration will be regulated to prevent dangerous practices, with registration requirements for kite makers and organized groups, and bans on harmful materials.

This significant financial commitment and regulatory framework signal a new chapter for Basant in Pakistan. The event not only aims to recreate the joy of traditional kite flying but also to promote cultural heritage, boost tourism, and provide a controlled environment for families and visitors to enjoy the festival safely.
