Maryam Nawaz Sharif Announces Free Bus and Rickshaw Services to Ensure Safe Basant Celebrations in Lahore 2026

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed provincial authorities to implement comprehensive transport and safety arrangements to ensure a secure, organized, and accessible Basant celebration in Lahore in 2026.

As part of these measures, the Punjab government has confirmed that free bus and rickshaw services will operate across the city on February 6, 7, and 8, 2026. The initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, discourage the use of private motorbikes, and minimize the risk of accidents traditionally associated with Basant festivities.

According to officials, transport departments have been instructed to mobilize large fleets of buses and supervised rickshaws to operate free of charge throughout the three days. The move is designed to provide citizens with safe, reliable mobility while supporting the government’s broader public safety strategy.

Authorities stated that free transport is a key component of efforts to curb traffic disruptions and control hazardous riding behaviors that often escalate during large-scale cultural events.

The decision reflects the Punjab government’s wider policy to revive Lahore’s iconic spring festival under a strictly regulated framework after years of restrictions imposed due to safety concerns. Alongside transport arrangements, officials are finalizing detailed regulations regarding kite materials, authorized vendors, and controlled flying zones to balance cultural revival with public protection.

The government has reiterated that all safety measures will be enforced rigorously to ensure Basant 2026 is celebrated as a symbol of joy, heritage, and responsible civic participation.
