PM Shehbaz Boosts Security for Chinese Nationals, Launches Police Reforms

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating a safe and business-friendly environment for the Chinese community. He emphasized that the trust of Chinese companies in Pakistan’s economy is vital for the country’s future, particularly with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) entering its second phase focusing on business-to-business cooperation.

The PM directed all relevant authorities to prioritize security measures at airports and ensure the safety of Chinese citizens across provinces. He highlighted the role of Safe City projects, being developed nationwide according to international standards, as a model of enhanced security infrastructure. Additionally, all new housing schemes will incorporate Safe City-compliant surveillance systems.

Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi informed the PM that special security protocols are being enforced in light of potential threats, with support from both federal and provincial governments. Chinese nationals are now being provided security escorts, and special housing and transit arrangements are being enhanced.

Separately, earlier in the day, PM Shehbaz Sharif visited the National Police Academy (NPA) where he addressed the 52nd Commons Batch of Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs). Urging the new officers to uphold justice and public service, he laid out a comprehensive institutional revival plan, including:

  • Inauguration of the NPA Tactical Firing Range and Elite Police Training Facility

  • Groundbreaking of a new ASP Hostel

  • Introduction of a Master’s Degree Program for trainees

  • Development of a new 25-acre state-of-the-art campus

  • Establishment of an elite training school with modern tech and a firing range

  • Plans for training exchanges with China and the United Nations

Reflecting on his tenure as Punjab CM, the PM referenced security advancements such as the Elite Force, Safe City Project, Punjab Forensic Science Agency, and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD). He underscored the role of merit, recounting how he had once suspended officers for violating recruitment protocols.

Paying tribute to martyred officers, including those lost in flood relief efforts and the Jhelum incident, he called their sacrifice “the highest honour.”

Interior Minister Naqvi, in his welcome remarks, described the Academy’s past neglect and lauded the PM’s vision for transforming it into a center of police excellence. Also present were Ministers Talal Chaudhary and Attaullah Tarar, Commandant NPA Idress Ahmed, the IG and Commissioner Islamabad, and other officials.
