Punjab CM launches counter-narcotics force

In a landmark move, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has formally launched Pakistan’s first provincial Counter Narcotics Force (CNF), marking a historic advancement in the country’s fight against drug trafficking and abuse. Punjab becomes the first province to establish such a force under the framework of the 5th Constitutional Amendment, operationalizing the mandate granted by the 18th Amendment (2010) which empowered provinces to form specialized enforcement agencies.

At the launch ceremony, CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif proudly handed over the official flag to the newly formed force after a passing out parade, where CNF officers and sepoys took an oath of duty. The CM also witnessed a march past by women personnel, inspected tech-enabled operational vehicles, and received a comprehensive briefing from Brigadier Mazhar Iqbal, Director General of CNF.

In the first phase, 866 positions have been filled, with CNF units operational across all divisions of Punjab. Dedicated CNF stations and regional directorates have been established, while the second phase will expand the force to the district level. Personnel have undergone 12 weeks of rigorous training at the ANF Academy in Rawalpindi to ensure professionalism and effectiveness in anti-narcotics operations.

This initiative is part of a broader reform vision under CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who has already launched specialized forces like the Wildlife Force, Environment Force, Forest Force, and PERA, strengthening enforcement and governance in Punjab. The CM emphasized that CNF represents hope, resilience, and a safer future for the youth of Punjab.

Separately, on the occasion of World Brain Day, CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted the Punjab government’s commitment to preventing, treating, and raising awareness about mental health issues. She underlined that a healthy mind is essential for positive thinking and effective decision-making.

She called mental health “a vital component of life,” stressing that neglecting it is like neglecting life itself. CM Maryam urged society to shift its mindset, remove stigma, and treat mental and physical health equally, noting that only then can a truly inclusive and compassionate society be built.

The CM reaffirmed her commitment to improving mental healthcare facilities and fostering a culture of empathy and psychological well-being across the province.
