Punjab Government Lauded for Promoting Cultural Growth Through the Punjab Mass International Theatre Festival

The Punjab Mass International Theatre Festival at Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, has been recognized as a valuable step by the Government of Punjab in promoting cultural understanding, creativity, and intellectual development among citizens. The international event brought together artists, students, and theatre enthusiasts from various countries, contributing to the province’s growing reputation as a hub for art, learning, and tourism.

The festival featured a variety of performances, workshops, and discussions that encouraged artistic expression and cross-cultural exchange. A notable highlight was the pantomime workshop “Crossing the Boundaries of Languages – Telling Stories with the Art of Pantomime,” led by acclaimed German artist Christian H. Schröter at Adbi Baithak. Participants discovered how silence and expression can bridge linguistic divides, offering a deeper understanding of communication through art.

A compelling panel discussion on “Social Change Through Theatre and Its Challenges” provided valuable insights into the role of theatre in addressing social issues. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bilal and featuring Naveed Shahzad and Dr. Khalid Butt, the discussion emphasized theatre’s ability to shape thought, raise awareness, and foster a sense of shared responsibility in society.

The festival also showcased exceptional international performances, including French theatre company La Volga’s poetic and visually stunning production “Monsieur et Madame O,” and Maas Foundation’s emotionally resonant play “Permasher Singh,” which explored themes of humanity, compassion, and resilience.

The Punjab Mass International Theatre Festival serves as a testament to how government support for the arts can foster mental and emotional growth among young people, enrich the social environment, and enhance Punjab’s reputation as a destination for cultural and creative tourism.
