Saudi Arabia reaffirms humanitarian solidarity with Pakistan through food aid distribution

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, on Friday expressed profound gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its longstanding humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, describing it as a reflection of the “deep-rooted, historic, and unbreakable bonds” between the two brotherly nations.

The minister was addressing a special ceremony organized by the Saudi Embassy in Islamabad to launch the third phase of the Food Security Support Project, under which 30,000 food baskets will be distributed among underprivileged communities across Pakistan. The initiative is being implemented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief).

“This noble gesture is more than an act of charity – it is a reaffirmation of our spiritual, cultural, and strategic brotherhood. Saudi Arabia has always stood by Pakistan – in times of disaster, economic challenges, and beyond,” Rana Tanveer said.

He highlighted the Kingdom’s consistent and generous support during key national crises, including the earthquakes of 2005 and 2013 and the devastating floods of 2010, 2014, and 2022. “Whether it’s food, medicine, shelter, or cash assistance, Saudi Arabia has always led from the front,” he noted.

The minister emphasized Saudi Arabia’s critical role in strengthening food security and agricultural development in Pakistan. He cited over $220 million in aid provided in 2023 alone for food stability initiatives and praised the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for enhancing Pakistan’s agricultural infrastructure, storage systems, and irrigation capacity.

He also acknowledged the Kingdom’s broader contributions in development, including the financing of hospitals, schools, vocational centers, and health camps that are transforming lives across the country.

Rana Tanveer recalled notable gestures of generosity from Saudi leaders, including the late King Abdullah’s $200 million donation for 2010 flood victims and the continued humanitarian efforts led by King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

“This friendship is mutual,” he said, referring to the Pakistan Army’s collaboration with Saudi Arabia through regional security initiatives like the Islamic Military Counter-Terrorism Coalition. He also lauded the contribution of over 2.5 million Pakistani workers in the Kingdom, whose remittances play a vital role in Pakistan’s economy.

Calling the distribution of food baskets a “symbol of unity of the Ummah,” the minister concluded by expressing deep appreciation:
“On behalf of the Government of Pakistan, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the leadership and people of Saudi Arabia. May our friendship continue to grow, and may Allah guide us toward a future of shared prosperity.”
