KP Tourism Launches Rs2 Billion Master Plan to Boost Tourism in Dir and Merged Districts

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department has unveiled a comprehensive Rs2 billion master plan aimed at developing and promoting tourism across the province, with a special focus on Dir and the newly merged districts.

This major initiative was announced by Secretary of Tourism and Culture Muhammad Bakhtiar Khan during a meeting with a delegation from the Dir Welfare Organization (DWO) Peshawar, led by Haji Sultan Yousaf Dir Lala. The meeting underscored the province’s commitment to unlocking Dir’s untapped potential, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

Key Developments and Initiatives:

  • Tourist Site Development:
The mega plan includes infrastructure development across tourist hotspots in Dir and surrounding regions. Work on the road to Jehaz Banda has already commenced with the tendering process underway.

  • Focus on Lesser-Known Attractions:
While Kumrat Valley currently receives the most attention, the delegation emphasized the need to improve access to other picturesque destinations such as Laram Top, Khadango, Chinaroona, Bakht Bilanda, Nawa Pass, Lam Char, Shahi Top, Lawari Top, Dog Dara, Sheel Dab, Shabanal, Jehaz Banda, and Badgoi Top.

  • HomeGuest Scheme Launched:
To encourage community involvement and sustainable tourism, the department has introduced a HomeGuest program. This initiative will financially support locals in offering home-based accommodations for tourists, particularly from Sheringal to Kumrat, similar to the successful model in Chitral.

  • Kumrat Development Authority Streamlined:
The administrative framework for Kumrat has been enhanced to ensure smoother operations and coordinated development.

  • Government’s Full Backing:
Secretary Bakhtiar Khan noted the strong commitment of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Advisor on Tourism Zahid Khan Zeb, and Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah to the promotion of tourism across KP.

Cultural Integration:

The delegation proposed celebrating Dir’s Cultural Day at the provincial level. Secretary Tourism welcomed the idea and expressed willingness to consider it, provided it is routed through elected representatives. He emphasized the role of cultural festivals in spreading joy and nurturing creativity.

Exchange of Cultural Symbols:

The meeting concluded with a symbolic exchange of cultural gifts. The delegation presented the Secretary with Dir’s traditional “White Diroji Cap”, while in return, the Department of Culture gifted the guests with a symbolic Markhor statue—representing Pakistan’s national animal—and an honorary shield.

Public Response:

The Dir Welfare Organization applauded the provincial government’s proactive approach and assured full cooperation in promoting tourism and cultural heritage in the region.
