Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced major relief measures for students under the province’s electric bike scheme, with more than 125,000 electric bikes set to be provided to students across Punjab.
Under the revised scheme, students will not be required to pay a down payment, reducing the initial financial burden on young applicants. The Punjab government will also bear the cost of interest and insurance on the electric bikes.
During the review of the scheme, an agreement was reached in principle on a proposal to set the students’ monthly installment at approximately Rs3,000, making the scheme more affordable for students and their families.
The initiative is aimed at improving mobility for students and providing them with an affordable and modern means of transportation for commuting to educational institutions. The promotion of electric bikes is also expected to support the adoption of cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to open the e-bike portal within the current week, enabling eligible students to access information and begin the application process.
The scheme represents a major youth-focused transportation initiative by the Punjab government, particularly for students who face challenges in managing daily commuting expenses. By reducing upfront costs and subsidizing key financial components, the government aims to make electric mobility more accessible to a larger number of students.
The proposed monthly installment of around Rs3,000 is expected to further improve affordability, while government coverage of interest and insurance will provide additional financial support to beneficiaries.
The electric bike initiative is part of broader efforts to expand modern transportation options for Punjab’s young population while encouraging environmentally sustainable mobility.
