From a Teenage Vision to a National Success Story: Zainab Ahmad Shafiq Inspires UMT Students

Zainab Ahmad Shafiq, Founder and CEO of Chocolate Academy Pakistan, shared her entrepreneurial journey and inspired students to pursue their ambitions during a podcast organised by Chocolate Academy Pakistan in collaboration with the entrepreneurship team of the University of Management and Technology (UMT).

The discussion focused on her early vision, the challenges of establishing a business at a young age and the importance of perseverance, mentorship and family support in turning an idea into reality. Her story offered students an example of how identifying an opportunity and taking practical steps towards a goal can lay the foundation for an entrepreneurial venture.

Reflecting on the beginnings of her journey, Zainab explained that she recognised a lack of innovation in Pakistan’s chocolate industry when she was just 14 years old. Rather than treating this observation as a passing interest, she began researching opportunities and exploring how she could contribute to the sector.

At the age of 16, she took steps to transform her vision into reality with the support of her mother. She acknowledged her mother’s contribution to the initiative, saying, “My mother is the founder of Chocolate Academy,” in recognition of the guidance, encouragement and initial investment that helped make the venture possible.

Her experience highlighted the importance of a supportive environment for young entrepreneurs. Family encouragement, access to resources and the confidence to explore new ideas can help young people move from identifying a problem to developing a practical business concept.

Zainab also spoke about the challenges she encountered while pursuing her ambitions. Being young brought questions about her experience and the credibility of her vision, making it necessary to build trust and demonstrate commitment. She emphasised that self-belief, consistency and a clear focus were essential to continuing despite doubts and obstacles.

Addressing the students, she encouraged them to communicate their ideas to their parents, seek advice from experienced mentors and surround themselves with people who support their goals. She also highlighted the value of building strong teams, recognising that long-term business development requires collaboration as well as individual determination.

What began in a small kitchen has since grown into a network of more than 10 campuses across Pakistan, with over 5,000 students trained, according to the information shared. This development reflects the expansion of the initiative from an early entrepreneurial vision into a broader platform for chocolate education and skills development.

Through Chocolate Academy Pakistan, the focus extends beyond chocolate-making to nurturing practical skills and encouraging individuals to explore opportunities within the culinary and food industries. Such initiatives can contribute to entrepreneurship by helping aspiring professionals develop their capabilities and consider new directions for their careers.

The podcast also created an opportunity for UMT students to engage with the realities of entrepreneurship, including the uncertainty that can accompany new ideas, the importance of persistence and the role of support networks in business development. By sharing her experience, Zainab encouraged students to approach their ambitions with a willingness to learn, adapt and work consistently towards their objectives.

Her journey underscores the potential of young entrepreneurs to identify opportunities within local industries and develop ideas that can grow over time. It also highlights the importance of combining creativity with research, practical action and a clear sense of purpose.

Concluding with a message of encouragement for aspiring entrepreneurs, Zainab urged students to believe in their vision, remain consistent and take steps to turn their ideas into reality. Her story served as a reminder that age does not have to prevent individuals from exploring opportunities, provided they are willing to learn, seek support and remain committed to their goals.
