PM Shehbaz unveils FBR’s first AI-powered customs system

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced the launch of Pakistan’s first-ever artificial intelligence-based Customs Clearance and Risk Management System (RMS) during a high-level meeting to review Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) reforms.

The AI-powered RMS is designed to transform customs operations by reducing delays, minimizing human intervention, and enhancing overall efficiency. Using advanced machine learning algorithms and BOTs, the system will evaluate the nature and cost of imported and exported goods, enabling faster, more accurate customs clearance.

Key Highlights of the New System:

  • 92% improvement in overall system performance during initial testing.

  • 83% increase in tax determination via Goods Declarations (GD).

  • Green channel clearances more than doubled, expediting trade processes.

The RMS aims to bring greater transparency and fairness to Pakistan’s customs procedures, benefiting both traders and tax authorities. Officials said the automated system will continuously learn and improve, offering real-time assessments and easing the burden on customs staff.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of FBR reforms, stating:

“By automating the tax system, we are making it more transparent and effective. This modern, technology-based approach will ease business operations and offer convenience to taxpayers.”

The meeting also included a review of new video analytics-based tax collection tools targeting the manufacturing sector. These tools showed 98% efficiency in pilot phases and are expected to enhance revenue collection without requiring direct human oversight.

The session was attended by key officials including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, FBR Chairman, and other senior government representatives.

This technological leap marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to digitize and modernize its taxation and trade systems.
