Punjab Allocates Rs. 40 Billion to Expand EV Charging Network for Electric Bus Fleet

The Punjab government has allocated Rs. 40 billion in the current fiscal year to develop a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, supporting the rapid expansion of its electric bus network across the province.

The investment forms a key part of Punjab’s strategy to modernize public transportation and promote environmentally friendly mobility. The new charging infrastructure will facilitate the operation of the province’s growing fleet of electric buses, ensuring reliable and efficient services for commuters.

Officials said the funding will be used to establish charging stations at bus depots, terminals, and strategic locations, creating a robust network capable of supporting large-scale electric public transport operations. The initiative is expected to reduce operational costs, improve service reliability, and encourage the wider adoption of clean-energy vehicles.

The charging infrastructure project complements the Punjab government’s ambitious public transport expansion plan, which aims to introduce thousands of electric buses across cities and tehsils in the coming years. Authorities believe the transition to electric mobility will help reduce carbon emissions, improve urban air quality, decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels, and provide commuters with a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable mode of transportation.

Experts have welcomed the initiative as a significant step toward building a modern and climate-resilient transport system while positioning Punjab as a leader in sustainable urban mobility in Pakistan.
