Punjab Launches Women-Only Buses on Lahore Metro to Enhance Safe Public Transport

The Punjab government has introduced five women-only Speedo buses on Lahore’s Metro Bus Service, marking a significant step toward improving the safety, comfort, and accessibility of public transportation for female commuters.

According to the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department, the specially designated Speedo buses have been temporarily deployed on the Metro Bus corridor to cater exclusively to women, particularly during peak travel hours when passenger demand is at its highest.

Provincial Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan said the initiative has been launched to protect women from overcrowding and harassment while ensuring they have access to a safer and more comfortable commuting experience. He added that the decision was implemented promptly following the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Officials stated that integrating the additional Speedo buses into the Metro Bus fleet will help reduce congestion, improve service efficiency, and encourage more women to use public transportation with greater confidence.

The initiative forms part of the Punjab government’s broader efforts to modernize the province’s public transport system while making it more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of women, students, and working professionals.

Authorities believe that providing dedicated transport facilities for women will not only enhance commuter safety but also support greater participation of women in education, employment, and other economic activities by making daily travel more secure and convenient.
