From Kitchen to Career: COTHM Garden Town Turns Food Safety into Practical Skills

Food safety is not only a classroom concept but an essential professional responsibility, and COTHM Garden Town is strengthening students’ understanding through practical, hands-on food safety training designed to prepare them for real-world food and hospitality environments.

Conducted under the guidance of Miss Zaryab, the practical sessions allow students to apply fundamental food safety principles while working through activities focused on safe food handling and hygienic preparation practices.

A key component of the training is food allergen awareness, helping students understand the importance of identifying potential allergens and taking appropriate precautions during food preparation. Students are also introduced to the risks associated with cross-contamination and the measures required to prevent the transfer of harmful contaminants between different foods, utensils and preparation surfaces.

The training further demonstrates the correct use of colour-coded cutting boards, helping students understand how designated equipment can support safer food preparation by separating different food categories and reducing cross-contamination risks.

Alongside technical procedures, students practise personal hygiene, hygienic food handling, safe preparation methods and cleanliness of food preparation areas. The practical approach enables them to experience food safety procedures directly rather than relying solely on theoretical instruction.

The sessions are designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional application, giving students an opportunity to develop habits that can be carried into commercial kitchens, restaurants, hotels and other food-related workplaces.

Food safety plays an important role in protecting consumers, maintaining professional standards and building trust within the hospitality and culinary industry. For students preparing to enter these fields, understanding safe working practices from the beginning of their professional education can contribute to stronger workplace readiness.

Through practical food safety training, COTHM Garden Town continues to emphasise the importance of hygiene, responsibility and professional discipline, helping students build the knowledge and practical skills required to work confidently and safely in food-related environments.
