COTHM Students Strengthen Communication and Confidence Skills During Job Readiness Programme

COTHM students participated in an interactive communication and confidence-building session on Day 2 of the Job Readiness Programme, focusing on the interpersonal skills required to perform effectively in hospitality workplaces.

Conducted by the Communication Skills Trainer at the COTHM campus, the session addressed workplace communication, spoken English, body language, confidence and public speaking. The activities were designed to help participants communicate more clearly and professionally in situations commonly encountered in the hospitality industry.

Students practised guest-service conversations in English, giving them an opportunity to apply communication skills in practical workplace scenarios. The session also explored effective and ineffective body language, helping participants understand how posture, gestures, eye contact and overall presence can influence professional interactions.

A key activity involved delivering 30 to 60-second self-introductions, followed by spontaneous one-minute speaking exercises. These activities encouraged students to organise their thoughts quickly, speak without extensive preparation and become more comfortable communicating in front of others.

The practical nature of the session placed particular emphasis on confidence and reducing hesitation. Rather than relying solely on classroom-based instruction, students were encouraged to participate, practise and receive direct experience in communicating under different situations.

Communication plays an important role in hospitality, where professionals regularly interact with guests, colleagues, supervisors and industry partners. The ability to listen attentively, respond appropriately and communicate with confidence can contribute to effective workplace relationships and professional guest service.

The Day 2 activities therefore formed an important part of the Job Readiness Programme, helping students connect communication concepts with practical workplace situations. Through repeated practice, participants developed greater awareness of their communication style, body language and professional presence.
