Abu Dhabi has introduced special license plates for autonomous (driverless) vehicles, marking another significant step in the emirate’s efforts to expand smart mobility and prepare for the future of transportation.
According to authorities, the newly introduced number plates will make it easier to identify both commercial autonomous vehicles and those operating under trial programs. Vehicles providing commercial self-driving services will carry license plates displaying the words “Auto Drive,” while those participating in pilot projects will be marked with “Test.”
Officials said the dedicated license plates will feature a distinctive blue color, allowing traffic authorities and the public to easily recognize autonomous vehicles operating on the roads.
The initiative is expected to enhance traffic monitoring, improve road safety, and support the safe integration of autonomous vehicle technology into Abu Dhabi’s transport network. Authorities believe the clear identification system will also help emergency services, regulators, and road users distinguish driverless vehicles during testing and commercial operations.
The introduction of the new license plates comes as Abu Dhabi continues to expand the deployment and testing of autonomous vehicles as part of its broader vision to become a global leader in smart transportation and advanced mobility solutions.
Officials say the move reflects the emirate’s commitment to embracing innovation, improving urban mobility, and creating a safer, more efficient, and technology-driven transport ecosystem.
