Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the former Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, to lead the national carrier’s transformation journey, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to rebuild and modernize operations.
Widely recognized for transforming Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s largest and one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers, Tewolde brings decades of international aviation leadership and strategic management experience. His appointment is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing PIA’s operational performance, service quality, and global competitiveness.
The leadership transition follows PIA’s privatization and the transfer of management control to an Arif Habib Group-led consortium, which has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the airline’s revival.
According to officials, the transformation strategy includes substantial investments in fleet expansion, aircraft modernization, operational efficiency, customer experience, and network growth. The new management aims to restore PIA’s reputation, strengthen its international presence, and position the airline for long-term financial sustainability.
Industry experts believe Tewolde’s proven track record in airline transformation and global aviation leadership will provide valuable direction as PIA embarks on a new chapter focused on strategic reforms, operational excellence, and sustainable growth.
The appointment reflects the new management’s commitment to revitalizing Pakistan’s national carrier and rebuilding passenger confidence through innovation, improved service standards, and world-class operational practices.
