Punjab Plants 40 Million Native Trees in One of Pakistan’s Largest Digitally Monitored Afforestation Campaigns

Punjab has taken a major step toward environmental sustainability and climate resilience by successfully planting 40 million native and indigenous trees during the 2025–26 plantation season. The ambitious initiative, led by the Punjab Forestry and Wildlife Department, is among the largest afforestation campaigns undertaken in the province.

The plantation drive covered a wide range of locations, including irrigated forests, compact plantation sites, canal-side green belts, and rail-side avenues, contributing to the restoration of ecosystems, increased green cover, and improved biodiversity across Punjab.

A key feature of the campaign is the use of digital geo-tagging for every plantation site, enabling authorities to accurately monitor tree survival, growth, and maintenance. Officials say this makes it one of Pakistan’s largest digitally monitored plantation initiatives, ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and long-term environmental management.

The project supports the province’s broader vision of combating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, protecting natural habitats, and creating healthier environments for future generations. Experts believe the large-scale plantation effort will also help improve air quality, strengthen green corridors, and enhance ecological resilience across Punjab.

The initiative reflects the government’s continued commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation, reinforcing Punjab’s role in promoting a greener and more climate-resilient Pakistan.
