Punjab to Introduce 5,000 Electric Buses in Five Years, Paving the Way for a Greener Public Transport System

In a landmark initiative aimed at transforming Punjab’s public transportation network, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced an ambitious plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years, marking one of Pakistan’s largest investments in sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport.

The initiative is designed to provide citizens with safe, modern, affordable, and clean transportation while significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in urban and semi-urban areas.

According to officials, the project will be implemented in phases. During the first phase, 1,500 electric buses will be deployed across 91 tehsils, expanding access to reliable public transport beyond major cities and bringing modern transit facilities to underserved communities.

Authorities revealed that 189 electric buses are already prepared for launch, while an additional 488 buses are expected to arrive from China later this month to accelerate the rollout of the project.

In another significant development, Punjab has also begun the local assembly of electric buses, a move expected to reduce costs, strengthen the domestic manufacturing sector, create employment opportunities, and support the transfer of modern technology to Pakistan’s automotive industry.

The electric bus initiative forms part of the provincial government’s broader vision to build a sustainable, energy-efficient, and commuter-friendly transportation system. Officials believe the project will not only improve daily commuting for millions of residents but also contribute to Pakistan’s climate goals by reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Experts view the transition to electric public transport as a major milestone in Punjab’s urban development strategy. Besides lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving environmental sustainability, the initiative is expected to reduce operating costs, enhance passenger comfort, and encourage greater use of public transportation.

Speaking about the project, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering world-class public transport services that meet international standards while ensuring accessibility, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Once fully implemented, the fleet of 5,000 electric buses is expected to transform mobility across Punjab, making the province a national leader in green transportation and setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban development in Pakistan.
