Pakistan Completes PIA Privatisation as Management Officially Transferred to New Owners

Pakistan has officially completed the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL), marking a landmark milestone in the country’s aviation and economic reform agenda. The Privatisation Commission formally transferred the airline’s management control to the Arif Habib Corporation-led consortium, ushering in a new era for the national carrier.

The transfer was finalized after all conditions stipulated in the Share Purchase and Subscription Agreement (SPSA) were successfully fulfilled, bringing the long-awaited privatisation process to its conclusion.

As part of the transition, a newly restructured Board of Directors has assumed responsibility for the airline’s governance. Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Anwar Ali Haider, Managing Director of the Fauji Foundation, has been appointed as the first Chairman of the privatized PIA, signaling the beginning of a new phase focused on operational excellence, financial sustainability, and long-term growth.

Officials believe the successful transfer represents a significant step toward revitalizing Pakistan’s flagship airline through private-sector expertise, stronger corporate governance, and improved operational efficiency. The move is expected to enhance service quality, strengthen financial performance, and position the airline for greater competitiveness in regional and international aviation markets.

The privatisation of PIA forms part of the government’s broader strategy to reform state-owned enterprises, attract investment, reduce the fiscal burden on the national exchequer, and encourage sustainable economic growth through increased private-sector participation.

Industry experts view the transition as one of the most significant developments in Pakistan’s aviation history, expressing optimism that new leadership and strategic investment will help modernize the airline, expand its network, improve customer experience, and restore its position as a competitive international carrier.

With new management now officially in charge, the focus shifts toward implementing reforms that will strengthen PIA’s operational performance while rebuilding passenger confidence and supporting the future growth of Pakistan’s aviation sector.
