New Era for PIA: Government Finalizes Handover to Private Owners

Pakistan is expected to complete the transfer of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to its new owners by the end of June, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing privatization efforts.

According to Privatization Adviser Muhammad Ali, the government has resolved most of the legal, regulatory, and procedural challenges that remained following the airline’s sale in December 2025. The transfer process is now in its final stages, with authorities working to complete the remaining formalities before handing over management to the new ownership group.

The successful bid for a 75 percent stake in PIA was led by Arif Habib Corporation, with Fauji Fertilizer Company later joining the consortium. The agreement includes significant investment commitments aimed at reducing the airline’s financial burden, improving operational efficiency, and modernizing its fleet and services.

Government officials have also finalized key regulatory approvals, addressed taxation issues, and introduced necessary legal amendments to facilitate the transition. The development reflects Pakistan’s broader strategy to attract private investment, improve the performance of state-owned enterprises, and strengthen economic reforms.

The privatization of PIA is considered one of the country’s most significant economic restructuring initiatives. Industry observers believe that private-sector management and fresh investment could help transform the national carrier into a more competitive and financially sustainable airline.

Alongside the PIA transaction, the government is also advancing privatization and concession plans in the aviation and energy sectors as part of its wider economic reform agenda.

If completed as scheduled, the ownership transfer will open a new chapter for Pakistan’s aviation industry and could serve as a benchmark for future privatization projects across the country.
