Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved Rs. 11 billion to support Pakistan’s hosting of the 14th South Asian Games, scheduled to take place in March 2027. The event marks the return of the prestigious regional sporting competition to Pakistan after a gap of 22 years, reflecting the country’s renewed commitment to promoting sports and regional cooperation.
Following the approval, authorities have been directed to begin preparations immediately. The comprehensive plan includes the upgradation of sports stadiums, improvement of competition venues, development of logistics and operational infrastructure, and the establishment of a dedicated Games Secretariat in Islamabad to oversee planning and coordination.
More than 3,500 athletes from eight South Asian countries are expected to participate in the Games, competing across 27 sporting disciplines. The competitions will be hosted in Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad, with the three cities preparing to welcome athletes, officials, and spectators from across the region.
Officials believe the South Asian Games will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to showcase its modern sporting infrastructure, organizational capabilities, and hospitality on an international stage. The event is also expected to strengthen regional friendship, encourage cultural exchange, and promote healthy sporting competition among South Asian nations.
Sports authorities have described the Games as a major platform for emerging athletes to demonstrate their talent while inspiring greater youth participation in sports. The event is also expected to generate economic activity through tourism, hospitality, transportation, and related industries.
As preparations move forward, Pakistan aims to deliver a successful edition of the South Asian Games that celebrates athletic excellence, regional unity, and the country’s growing role in international sports.
