Pakistan Sets Target of 2.2 Million Electric Vehicles on Roads by 2030

The Government of Pakistan has unveiled an ambitious plan to place 2.2 million electric vehicles (EVs) on the country’s roads by 2030, marking a major step toward cleaner transportation, reduced fuel imports, and environmental sustainability.

During a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production, officials outlined a series of measures aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric mobility across the country. As part of the initiative, the government has allocated Rs. 9 billion in subsidies to support the purchase of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles.

Under the subsidy scheme, citizens purchasing an electric motorcycle will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs. 80,000 per bike, making EV ownership more affordable, particularly for middle- and low-income households.

Officials also highlighted the progress of Pakistan’s growing electric vehicle industry, revealing that the country has already locally manufactured more than 12,800 electric vehicles and over 160,000 electric motorcycles. The figures reflect the rapid development of the domestic EV sector and increasing investment in sustainable transportation technologies.

Experts believe that wider adoption of electric vehicles will significantly reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve urban air quality. The transition is also expected to support Pakistan’s climate goals while encouraging local manufacturing and creating new employment opportunities in the green economy.

The government’s electric mobility strategy forms part of its broader efforts to modernize the transport sector, promote clean energy solutions, and build a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for Pakistan.
