Sindh’s Historic Forts Gain Global Recognition with UNESCO Tentative Listing

In a significant milestone for Pakistan’s cultural heritage, three iconic sites from Sindh have been included in the tentative list of the UNESCO, marking a major step toward global recognition and preservation.

The newly listed sites include the historic Kot Diji Fort, along with the culturally significant Naukot Fort and Umerkot Fort. These landmarks reflect the rich architectural heritage, historical depth, and cultural identity of the Sindh region.

Welcoming the development, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah termed the inclusion a “great achievement” for the province. He emphasized that recognition by UNESCO will significantly contribute to promoting Sindh’s heritage on the global stage.

He further noted that this milestone will not only enhance international visibility but also support preservation efforts, boost tourism, and create new opportunities for cultural exchange. The tentative listing is an important step toward eventual nomination for full World Heritage status.

Experts believe that the recognition of Kot Diji Fort, Naukot Fort, and Umerkot Fort highlights Pakistan’s immense potential in heritage tourism and reinforces the need for sustained conservation initiatives.
