In one of the most ambitious agricultural initiatives in Punjab’s history, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the distribution of 50,000 tractors to farmers over the next three years, reinforcing the provincial government’s commitment to modernising agriculture, improving productivity, and empowering farming communities.
The announcement was made during a high-level review meeting of the Punjab Agriculture Department, where officials presented progress on key agricultural reforms, including the Chief Minister’s Kisan Card Programme, mechanisation projects, and farmer welfare initiatives.
Describing agriculture as the backbone of Punjab’s economy, the Chief Minister said the government is investing heavily in modern farming technologies and financial support programmes to ensure farmers have the resources they need to increase crop production and strengthen food security.
During the briefing, officials revealed that the Kisan Card Programme has already disbursed Rs. 360 billion in interest-free agricultural loans, enabling thousands of farmers to purchase essential farming inputs. The programme has achieved an exceptional 99 percent loan repayment rate, reflecting the confidence and responsible participation of Punjab’s farming community.
According to officials, nearly 80 percent of the financing has been utilized for the purchase of fertilizers, helping farmers reduce production costs while improving crop yields. The meeting was also informed that effective government oversight and supply management have helped maintain relatively stable urea prices across Punjab over the past two years, providing additional relief to cultivators.
The government also reviewed progress under the Green Tractor Scheme, through which 34,000 subsidized tractors are being distributed in phases. Thousands of beneficiaries have become tractor owners for the first time, enabling them to adopt modern farming practices and improve operational efficiency.
Building on this success, the Chief Minister announced an additional 50,000 tractors to be distributed over the next three years, making it the largest tractor support programme ever launched in Punjab. The initiative is expected to significantly accelerate agricultural mechanisation, improve farm productivity, and increase farmers’ incomes across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the tractor distribution process will continue through a fully computerized and transparent system, ensuring fair and merit-based allocation among eligible farmers.
Experts believe the comprehensive agricultural package, which combines mechanisation, affordable financing, and improved access to farming inputs, will play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s agricultural sector, enhancing food security, and supporting sustainable rural development.
The initiative reflects the Punjab government’s long-term vision of building a modern, resilient, and technology-driven agriculture sector capable of meeting the country’s growing food demands while improving the livelihoods of millions of farmers.
