Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a large-scale shrimp farming initiative, marking a significant step toward diversifying the province’s agricultural economy and promoting modern aquaculture practices.
The initiative aims to utilize Punjab’s vast saline and underutilized lands for shrimp cultivation, transforming them into productive economic zones. By introducing advanced farming techniques and encouraging private sector participation, the government seeks to create new income streams for farmers while enhancing export potential.
Officials highlighted that the project will not only strengthen the aquaculture sector but also generate employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas. Training programs, technical support, and infrastructure development are expected to be key components of the initiative, ensuring sustainable and efficient shrimp production.
Speaking at the launch, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of innovation in agriculture, stating that shrimp farming can become a game-changer for Punjab’s economy. She reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and introducing high-value farming models that align with global market demands.
The initiative is being seen as a forward-looking move to position Punjab as a competitive player in the international seafood market, while also contributing to food security and economic growth.
