In a major step towards transforming public transport, the Pakistan Railways and the Government of Punjab have formally signed a landmark memorandum of understanding to introduce a state-of-the-art fast train service between Lahore and Rawalpindi, alongside a wide network of upgraded regional routes.
The agreement was signed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, marking what officials describe as a defining moment for the future of rail connectivity in the province.
Under this ambitious initiative, Pakistan’s first fast train service will connect Lahore and Rawalpindi, covering a distance of approximately 280 kilometers in just 2 hours and 15 minutes. The project signals a shift towards high-speed, efficient, and modern rail travel, aiming to ease congestion on highways while offering a reliable alternative for millions of commuters.
Beyond the flagship route, the plan includes the expansion of railway services across nearly 1,415 kilometers, spanning 20 regions and 8 major local routes. Modern diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains will be introduced to improve regional connectivity, linking key areas such as Shahdara to Narowal and Sialkot, Raiwind, Kasur, Pakpattan to Lodhran, Sheikhupura, Jaranwala to Shorkot, Lalamusa, Malakwal to Sargodha, Faisalabad via Chak Jhumra, and the inter-provincial corridor from Kot Addu to Kashmore via Dera Ghazi Khan.
To support the upgraded network, new locomotives and modern passenger coaches will be inducted, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and passenger comfort. According to Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi, the project is expected to benefit nearly 90 million passengers across nine routes, bringing Pakistan’s rail system closer to international standards.
Infrastructure development remains a key pillar of the initiative. The historic Lahore Railway Station is undergoing major upgrades, including beautification and the introduction of international-standard parking facilities. In addition, automated safety systems are being deployed across the network to reduce accidents and improve operational reliability.
Environmental sustainability is also at the core of the project. Over 400,000 trees will be planted along railway tracks, while a 40-kilometer green corridor from Shahdara to Raiwind is being developed to promote eco-friendly transport and contribute to smog reduction efforts.
Officials revealed that the Punjab government has committed Rs45 billion to upgrade nine local routes, while an estimated Rs350 billion will be invested in the Lahore-Rawalpindi fast train project, including the construction of new railway tracks.
With strong political backing and a focus on modernization, sustainability, and connectivity, this initiative is poised to reshape the travel landscape of Punjab offering faster, safer, and greener mobility for millions while unlocking new economic opportunities across the region.
